Does circumcision affect penis size

Circumcision has been done for several thousand years. It may have started as a hygiene measure in communities living in hot, dry, dusty climates, and then became a cultural and religious ritual. Today, worldwide, approximately 35% of males are circumcised. Higher socio-economic-educational ranking is associated with higher rates of circumcision, being 85% for US-born males. Rates for newborns’ circumcision decreased in the 1970s-80s, then rose again in line with medical research findings of benefits.

There are conflicting points of view about the risks and possible benefits of circumcision. The focus of this article, however, is on the debate that whether circumcision really affects male penis size or not.

Average penis size

According to statistics from about two years ago, average penis size was 3.5″ in flaccid state (not erect) and 5.5 – 6.5″ in erect state. This is measured from the base of the penis, under the stomach, to the end of the head of the penis. Penis size has been shown to continue long into the late teens and even up to 21 years. However, penis thickness and length both are highly variable and mainly depend upon one’s family / genes.

What is circumcision?

Circumcision is the removal of the flap of skin which naturally covers the tip of the penis.
Some people believe that removing the foreskin may lead to the tip of the penis being less sensitive, perhaps leading to less sexual pleasure later in life. However, to date, there is no strong scientific evidence to support the same assumption.  Similarly, another common myth is that circumcision affects penis length, making it relatively shorter.

Does circumcision affect penis length / size?

It should be noted that while circumcision removes some extra skin (foreskin) from around the head of the penis, it does not shorten the actual penis length nor does the procedure affect the growth of the penis. The actual penis length and girth comprises of skin, protein tissues, cells and blood vessels and circumcision does not affect any of these structures. In other words, as only skin is being removed, the actual penis is not touched.  Penis size (both thickness and length) is determined by the cell structure of the penis not the amount of skin.

Another, very important evidence-based argument is that growth and development of the penis is an “on-going”, natural process that continues actively and consistently from birth to adulthood. Therefore, to date, there is no reason to believe that circumcision (when it is mostly done after birth) interferes with penis growth.

Finally, the growth and development of the penis is mainly under the hormonal influence (especially testosterone, the major male sex hormone) and there is no established association between circumcision and reduced production or release of testosterone which would lead to small or micropenis.
Benefits to women of male circumcision

The load of infectious bacteria and viruses that accumulate under the foreskin is delivered into the female genital tract during sex. Thus when the male partner is circumcised there is:
•A 5-fold reduction in risk of cervical cancer (which is caused by human papillomavirus).
•A 5-fold reduction in risk of a woman being infected by Chlamydia, thus reducing risk of infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease, and ectopic pregnancy.
•A 2-fold reduction in risk of genital herpes.
•A reduced risk of other sexually transmitted infections such as HIV (the virus which causes AIDS), syphilis, and chancroid, since it is less likely that the male partner has any of these.
•A lack of malodorous smegma and associated bacteria on the penis during sex.
•No need for concern that the man has phimosis and thus being unable to engage in sexual intercourse, because the 1 in 10 uncircumcised men with phimosis cannot get an erection.
•Improved sexual pleasure, where women prefer the circumcised penis for appearance, hygiene, increased penile-vaginal contact, stimulation, staying power during sex, and greater likelihood of the woman reaching an orgasm

Benefits to men of male circumcision

HIV prevention: A WHO/UNAIDS study indicates that circumcised men have up to a 60 per cent lower risk of HIV infection (WHO, UNAIDS, 2007). German development cooperation takes the position that it is absolutely essential to combine male circumcision with other HIV prevention methods, particularly with information and education and with condom use.

Less risk of Phimosis: Circumcision eliminates the risk of phimosis, which not only prevents sex, but makes cleaning under the foreskin and passing urine difficult and painful, as well as greatly increasing the risk of penile cancer and geriatric problems.

Enhanced sexual pleasure: It is reported that the sexual experience is more intense for circumcised males and that the man can better control his arousal when the glans is thus exposed. Some men and women also feel that the circumcised penis is more aesthetic.

In addition, circumcision:
•Reduces the risk of inflammation and infection of the skin of the penis.
•Substantially reduces the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs), particularly in infancy.
•Virtually eliminates the risk of invasive penile cancer.
•Reduces the risk of prostate cancer.
•Reduces the risk of being infected by HIV, the AIDS virus.
•Provides substantial protection against thrush, syphilis, papillomavirus and chancroid.
•Eliminates the need for later circumcision for medical reasons.

All in all, apart from the obvious loss of the overhanging length of foreskin, there is no difference in the length or girth of a circumcised penis compared to an uncircumcised one.

Circumcision does not cut your penis. It is just the foreskin that is cut. Your penis is under the foreskin and remains of the same size, thickness and length. A circumcised penis may have a glans rim that flares out a bit more as it is not compressed by the foreskin, but that is to say the only difference one might notice.
We all know that penis size doesn’t matter but given the number of spam emails promising you a longer and thicker organ there is clearly a demand, or at least an interest in penile enhancement. While most of these claims are, sometimes literally, snake oil potions, are there any proven methods that can make your penis bigger? Well there are actually a couple of scientifically proven ways to do this. And given that the proven methods are so few, I thought I’d beef up this post with with some other strategies to at least make sure that what you were given does not get any smaller.

1. Don’t get yourself circumcised
While it may be too late for many Australian men, if you have been lucky enough to escape the knife up to this point you should make sure you continue to avoid the procedure. (If you are one of the unlucky ones don’t despair – check out number 2 below.)

The obvious effect that circumcision has is to physically reduce the size of the flacid penis. It is self evident that if you cut of part of your penis you will have, well, less penis. As comedian Will Anderson quipped on the television show Good News Week, in response to a proposed Californian bill to make circumcision illegal, “what man is going to look down and say gee, I think I want to make this smaller”.

While many Australian men think that this effect is only on flaccid penis size, there is evidence to suggest that there is also an effect on erect penis size. An Australian study has shown that a circumcised penis is on average 8mm smaller than an intact (uncircumcised) one. This is thought to be due to the restrictive skin on a circumcised penis ‘tethering’ the glans and inner parts of the shaft during an erection. In addition the erect girth also becomes smaller as you lose the double layer of skin just below the glans.

2. If you have been circumcised, restore
While medical evidence may be scant, there is strong anecdotal evidence that undergoing natural foreskin restoration can increase penis size. By natural foreskin restoration I am referring to the process of applying tension to the remnant foreskin over a long period of time to trigger a process called mitosis, whereby the skin cells multiply. The end result is that the remnant foreskin grows in length to have a similar look an function to a normal foreskin.

There are two reasons why this can also have an affect on penis size. The first is the reversal of the tethering effect (outlined in point 1 above). It stands to reason that if the tight foreskin caused by circumcision can make the penis shorter by tethering it to the body then loosening that skin will release it and allow it to grow to its full potential during an erection. Note though that this effect is often only experienced by men who were unfortunate enough to receive a very tight circumcision, and those who restore from a more generous base may not experience any increase in length.

The second is the theory that the frequent tension causes mitosis not only in the foreskin but also in the penile shaft.

Many many report increased length of around 1 inch as a result of foreskin restoration. My personal experience is that I started with an average penis length of 6 2/8 inches, and after almost completing the restoration process my length is still 6 2/8 inches. However, I did only first measure myself after 3 months into the restoration process.

3. Stop smoking
Did you really need another reason to stop smoking? Well apparently a study has shown that men who stopped smoking experienced an increase in size. Or more accurately their penis size reverted to the normal size it would have been if they had never started smoking.

4. Start jelqing
I must admit, this is one I have actually tried. It sounds like an attractive proposition: stroke your penis every day (umm..that’s what I do every day anyway) and it will grow. But the ‘stroking’ is more intense than my usual efforts. The idea is to force blood up from the base to the glans to cause minor damage to the vessels. I won’t describe it any more than than in case I get it wrong. Which would be likeley because it is such a complex process. From warm-up wraps to warm downs, stricts regimes of sets and reps with various levels of hardness, different grips, days on and rest days. I tried my own regime at each bathroom break and I decided that after three months that if I had even one millimeter or growth then I would continue. My total gains were 0mm.

5. Traction devices
While the skeptical general public usually laughs off the suggestion that any device could make your penis longer it seems that the medical and scientific community is now saying that these traction devices might actually work. Similar to foreskin restoration, the devices work by applying tension over a long period of time, which induces cell growth. Read more on one of the more popular traction devices here.

6. Penis pumps
While traction devices have some scientific backing, the efficacy of the penis pumping devices is less certain. While some studies have shown an increase others have shown no change. They work by creating a vaccum around the penis which causes an engorging of the penile blood vessels. Over time (and again, six months is usually required) the vessels can grow, resulting in an increase in length. Bathmate is one of the more popular brands.

7. Diet and exercise
If improving blood vessels can result in increased size, then perhaps diet and excercise can acheive the same thing? Sounds plausible to me but I am yet to find any solid evidence to suggest that diet and excercise can do anything other than improve the strength of your erection (which is not a bad thing anyway).

8. Lose weight
This is another one that falls under the category of getting your penis size back to what it naturally should be. As you gain weight around your pubic area (to get technical, the mons pubis), the growing area of fat can effectively ‘swallow’ the base of your penis. It’s pretty simple really – the more that gets buried in this layer of fat the less you have to show. If you needed further incentive to finally lose weight perhaps this is the reason to get you started!

Eight is an unconventional number for any ‘top’ list.  I had intended this to be a ‘top ten’ list but simple could not find enough methods with any sort of legitimacy to make the cut. If I have missed anything though please add them as a comment below.
Don’t get me wrong. I love my penis, too! I’m not trying to say there’s anything wrong with yours. I am just trying to get the message out that those fellows who are unhappy with being circumcised can change their situation. Like Penis Enlargement, alot of people don’t know or don’t believe that circumcision can be reversed. I have always thought of Penis Enlargement as standing for “Penis Enhancement”, because there is so much more to it than just enlarging it! Penis Enlargement gives you more confidence, more self-respect…and if you want more pleasure or more comfort, why not add FR to your routines? If you are completely happy with your penis, more power to you. If not, maybe FR is what you are looking for. I am trying not to be so fanatical about it, fellas. I really am. But it is such a BIG thing that it is hard not to want everyone to benefit from it, too. If this Penis Enlargement option makes you feel anger or defensive, maybe you should delve into your own feelings a little deeper and see what is actually down in there, because I am only presenting an option. Do you want more pleasure? Do you want a healthier penis? Do you want to gain quicker? Try Foreskin Restoration. Happy the way you are? Just ignore me. I’m just a little leery of the guys who feel compelled to say there’s nothing wrong with them, cause that makes me think that maybe, in the back of their head, they may think there is. For example, BeBox has stated that he is curious about it, but doesn’t feel compelled to do it right now. That’s cool. He was not hostile about it at all. Sometimes he reads my posts and sometimes he don’t. Godsize, on the other hand, kind of ran a rant on me one time… which makes me wonder if he is really so happy about it. Who knows, tho. I don’t. Just have an open mind. When SWM or Red post about hanging or clamps, nobody replies with “I DON’T hang weight, and I’m lovin’ it!” Why do some of you feel the need to do that to me…?

I don’t think it is just loss of skin that causes the restriction of potential size, but also the scarring that circumcision causes. As we all know, scar tissue does not stretch very easily. As far as skin being stretchy, as I have said a hundred times already, grab the skin on the back of your hand and stretch it as far as possible. You will get about 1/4″ of give. That’s not alot, considering that circumcision removes half the skin of the penis, which amounts to about 5″ of linear flesh unfolded (or about 20 square inches). Even if you were to count that skin as folded over in its natural position, 2.5″ of skin from c-scar to glans, minus the 1/4″ of stretch, leaves a man short 1.75″ of skin. 1.75″ is actually 20% of the average penis length. This is what is being held inside the abdomenal cavity by a tight circumcision. Oddly enough, from doing FR and a light newbie routine, I have lengthened my penis about that same amount in a very short time before my gains began to slow down. I am still gaining, but not as fast as I was before. Now I am at the size I feel that I would have been if I had not been cut. My penis is also not as curved or hairy as it was. FR is not the end all be all, but it can help you add some needed skin if you are tightly cut and maybe make some quick initial gains.

I did not intend the pictures to be gross out shots. There is a misconception here in the United States that the foreskin is “just a little flap of skin”. I just wanted the fellows here on MOS to understand how much skin is actually lost to circumcision.

More skin = more dick. I think that’s pretty simple.

In the cases of men who were circumcised too tightly as children, scarring and inadequate skin causes some of the length of the penis to be held inside the abdomenal cavity. Foreskin restoration techniques not only stretch out the c-scar a little, but it gives the penis a little more room to hang out in. As has been stated on this website before, “the penis is a bag, not a rope.”

I’m sorry the topical creams did not help you, but I would warrant that most of the men who were circumcised as adults did so because of medical reasons. Of course they would not regret having some defect corrected or removed.

I do not have a problem with adults who choose to have a circumcision. It is, after all, a personal choice. I do have a problem with the misconceptions that are perpetuated here in the United States by the medical establisHydromaxent to keep this profitable industry rolling. Men should have a full understanding what they are giving up. They often do not. And when a child is circumcised, there is no choice at all involved– which, in my opinion, is criminal.

If you have a circumcision fetish and want to chop yourself up, have at it. In Sweden, the circumcision rate is less than 10%, I believe, so being circumcised would make you noteworthy and unique among your population. If you truly enjoy being circumcised, I am glad for you and hope you do not develop any of the common problems of being circumcised: scarring, keratinization of the glans, erectile dysfunction from improper blood flow, etc.

But a circumcised penis is not natural and healthier, which is the perpetuated myth here in the US. It is a penis that has been cut up for cosmetic reasons.

Yes, that is an adult male being circumcised. At least, with an adult, the doc has an idea how much he can take off. With a baby, it is just a guessing game. Will the child be big when he matures, average, small? How much skin will he need to fully accomodate his penis at puberty? The guessing game is the reason some men are fine and some, like myself, had problems with their circumcision. I was left with enough skin to accomodate a 5 1/2 inch average penis at puberty. What I actually would have developed was a large 7 1/2 inch penis. That is the reason I shot from 5 1/2 to 7 1/2 so quickly when I started doing foreskin restoration and Penis Enlargement. I finally had the skin I needed to accomodate my cock. Don’t believe me…? Oh, well…

Looks better? That’s a personal opinion and you’re welcome to it. I don’t begrudge it. I think otherwise, but that is my personal opinion. More refined? Yeah, refined like all the other ritualistic mutilations that occur in societies like facial scarring and female circumcisions. 100 years from now, our society will look back on this circumcision fad and shake their heads in disbelief. They will ask themselves, “Why is the world did they cut up their private parts!?!?” We are already moving that direction now. Western states like California are already falling into the 50% on circumcisions.

I was circumcised at birth. I have no conscious traumatic memories of it.

You are correct in saying that a circumcised penis is less sensitive. If you like it that way, then I guess that’s great for you. I am very sexually active and the more sensitive the better. I am and have always been a hedonistic person.

Once your glans is kept protected by the foreskin, and the callous sloughs away, it is more sensitive…but it certainly doesn’t hurt to be touched! That is a misconception. The difference is more like wearing gloves. A penis with a calloused glans is like your hands with gloves on them. After the glans dekeratinizes, it is like the gloves have been removed. You can feel so much more with your fingertips, but it does not hurt to simply touch things. You just experience the sensations more finely.

I am nowhere near finished restoring. I have been doing it for five months now and have only succeeded in releasing about two inches of cock that was being held inside by the scarring and lack of skin. My penis still looks totally circumcised, it is just bigger and fatter and has lost some of its curve. I get a little bit of spontaneous coverage now and then when flaccid, but erect, the skin is still somewhat tight and I figure I will get some more quick gains until I get to the size that I should have always been genetically.
